Visit the villages of Lake Trasimeno

Lake Trasimeno is dotted with very characteristic millenary villages, cosy localities that guard historical anecdotes and curiosities. Choosing the Trasimeno Glamping Resort, you can enhance your holiday with truly magical cultural walks, exploring picturesque villages where time seems to have stopped.

There are many villages around the basin that merit a visit, some of which are mentioned below:

  • Castiglione del Lago: this is the pearl of Lake Trasimeno, a village with a mediaeval soul that lies on a limestone promontory. Protected by a strong city wall, Castiglione is characterised by three main squares and other places of interest, such as the Palazzo Ducale, the 17th-century Church of San Domenico di Guzman and the grandiose Rocca del Leone. This last, which can also be visited, presents itself as a panoramic balcony offering breathtaking views;

  • Passignano sul Trasimeno: this is one of the most evocative and characteristic fortified villages in Umbria. Passignano is situated directly on the lake and is dominated by a medieval fortress that offers dreamlike views of the basin and its islands. Other important sites are the Pieve di San Cristoforo and the ancient Santuario della Madonna dell'Oliveto;

  • Castel Rigone: rises near Passignano and is a unique treasure chest of historical, architectural and religious curiosities. Castel Rigone is a timeless hamlet, a charming locality that preserves traits and features of its ancient past. The Sanctuary of the Church of the Madonna dei Miracoli and the main square, where the Piccolo Teatro named after Giuseppe Verdi is located, are worth a visit;

  • Tuoro sul Trasimeno: also in the northern part of the basin stands this unique village, the perfect combination of history and natural beauty. Tuoro, in fact, is famous for having been the theatre of the Battle of Trasimeno between the Carthaginians and the Romans. For the most passionate, there is a 12-stage route that retraces crucial moments and places of the conflict. Alternatively, you can opt for a walk along the lakefront, even better if at sunset, or for a light walk in the woods leading to the scenic tower of Vernazzano;

  • Panicale: an authentic open-air museum studded with countless artistic treasures, so much so that it has been listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. Panicale surprises in all seasons with its soothing atmosphere and views: the most spectacular view is from Piazza Masolino, where the Palazzo del Podestà rises. Also much appreciated is the Church of San Sebastiano, where some works by painters of the calibre of Perugino and Raphael are jealously preserved.
