Lake Trasimeno: a paradise in the heart of Umbria
Nestled between the Umbrian heights and the Tuscan valleys, Lake Trasimeno is the fourth largest lake in Italy with a surface area of 128 square kilometres. The basin is of tectonic origin and lies in Umbria, a region nicknamed the 'green heart of Italy' for the beauty and incredible variety of its natural landscapes. This lake succeeds in expressing its charm in all seasons, being framed by lush vegetation and charming villages that are reflected in its waters.
The basin lies in the Parco del Lago Trasimeno, the largest of Umbria's seven regional parks. This protected natural area was established with the aim of safeguarding and enhancing an area with a very high landscape, historical and artistic value. Lake Trasimeno is also dotted with very characteristic millenary villages, picturesque and welcoming places where time seems to stand still. To name but a few, we recall Città della Pieve, Magione, Panicale and Castiglione del Lago, dominated by its mighty medieval fortress. Three small islands also emerge from the waters of Lake Trasimeno: Isola Polvese, the largest and most environmentally relevant, Isola Maggiore, the only one still inhabited, and Isola Minore, which cannot be visited as it is privately owned.
In this corner of paradise you can enjoy many outdoor experiences. If you are looking for more relaxing activities, you can opt for a walk or bike ride along the lake, or for a boat tour exploring the area from a privileged perspective. Thanks to its unique geographical location, Umbria is also an excellent starting point for visiting the sumptuous art cities of central Italy, such as Rome, Florence, Siena, Assisi and Orvieto. The entire region is also rich in fine culinary and wine traditions: places such as Norcia, Montefalco and Bevagna are eager to welcome you to taste the oil, wine, the famous truffle, and many other excellent food and wine products produced in these generous lands. If, on the other hand, you prefer more adrenalin-fuelled adventures, you can indulge in panoramic trekking in contact with nature, mountain bike excursions in the Umbrian hills or fun water sports such as windsurfing and sailing.
