Assisi is a treasure trove of historical, architectural and religious anecdotes: in addition to the numerous spiritual places that bear witness to the passage of Saint Francis, this town will surprise you with its majestic Rocca, the Pinacoteca Civica, the Piazza del Comune and the marvellous Tempio della Minerva.

We also recommend a visit to the city's most famous religious site, the sumptuous Basilica of San Francesco. The sanctuary consists of two overlapping parish churches, an upper and a lower one that also houses the crypt with the saint's remains. In general, the entire church is a kind of poster displaying some of the major masterpieces of Italian art history: illustrious artists of the calibre of Cimabue, Giotto, Lorenzetti and Simone Martini have worked there over the years.
