The basin is located in the heart of the Parco del Lago Trasimeno, the largest of the seven Umbrian regional parks. This protected natural area was established with the aim of safeguarding an area of very high landscape, historical and artistic value. The park covers an area of 13,200 hectares and includes the communes of Castiglione del Lago, Magione, Passignano, Tuoro and Panicale.

Thanks to the variety of its environments and its favourable climate, this unique naturalistic treasure chest has established itself as an ideal habitat for many animal and plant species. But its importance does not end here: in fact, the park is an essential wetland to guarantee the equilibrium of the entire ecosystem around Lake Trasimeno.
